Table Salt
The most common and basic ingredient in your kitchen could lead to cancer—and that ingredient is table salt.
Table salt is bleached to the point that it retains no nutritional value, and then iodine is added back in. This toxic substance (bleached table salt) dehydrates your cells and promotes fluid buildup. According to the World Cancer Research Fund, salt damages your stomach lining and causes lesions, which lead to some cancer. A systematic review in the journal Nutrients concluded that table salt was attributed to over 4 million deaths in 2015. These deaths are largely related to table salt intake promoting gastric cancer.
Iodized salt was intended to combat goiters, a thyroid condition, but it turns out the table salt is not beneficial to your thyroid, but rather damaging. In a letter to the editor in July 2020, scientists state:
“…as regards thyroid function, this amount of salt intake is not beneficial and is likely, in fact, to be harmful if the salt consumed is iodized table salt.”
Microplastics in Salt
In a study of 39 different salt brands, researchers found that 36 contained microplastics—and the three brands that did not contain microplastics were comprised of white, bleached salt. As mentioned above, bleached salt provides no nutritional value. Essentially, it is not salt.
We’re told we need ionized salt because we’re “iodine deficient” and so we buy fortified salt. But the American Thyroid Association found that when people move from an “iodine deficient” area, like parts of Europe, into America, their thyroids become damaged. We find that iodized table salt is actually toxic to the body and that the people in these “deficient” areas are actually able to uptake even small amounts of iodine and use it extremely well—when it comes from a plant source.
If you’re needing iodine, try a plant-based source. Black walnut oil tincture provides significantly more benefits than synthetic forms of iodine.
And as for salt? Use unrefined salts like Celtic salt or pink Himalayan salt that contain trace minerals. These are pure, unbleached salts that are good for the body—and the body knows how to use them.
